Part 5: Crossing Oceans and Conquering Death (2017 – 2025)

"Jinxiu, you must believe me."
"Tai Chi internal kung fu is neither slow-motion gymnastics nor a pretty routine for performance; it is an exercise in cultivating the body and nourishing the breath, a deep transformation of one's inner heart, and a battle of a person facing themselves."
— Wang Zuoyao
In 2016, Wang Zuoyao smoothly completed his second internal energy transformation in Tong'an, Fujian, firmly establishing the Datong Martial Arts Club—a venue he poured his blood, sweat, and tears into renovating from two of his own downtown apartments. However, the ultimate mission of a martial artist whose internal space had been completely reconstructed and whose energy flow was unobstructed could not be confined to a corner of southern Fujian. The boundless, vast forests and distant wooden cabin from his early recurring dreams acted like a calling from the other shore, guiding the trajectory of his destiny and affinity long in advance.
In 2017, calmly accepting his future mission, Wang Zuoyao took his family across the ocean and officially immigrated to Canada. Between 2017 and 2025, this Tai Chi inheritor, now over fifty years old, settled down to refine his martial arts in a quiet central Canadian city. Not only did he allow Eastern internal kung fu to take root and branch out in a cross-cultural context, but he also endured a catastrophic life-and-death ordeal in the emergency ward of a university hospital. Relying on the internal energy he had cultivated over decades of summers and winters, he reconstructed his life and welcomed the highest stage of his martial career: the "Third Transformation".
I. Following Destiny: "Subtraction" Teaching in Saskatoon (2017 – 2019)
In 2017, driven by family development and his grand vision of cross-cultural martial transmission, Wang Zuoyao took his family to Canada, settling in the quiet central city of Saskatoon. In 2019, he officially opened an overseas martial arts club in the town of Wakaw, Saskatchewan, embarking on his journey of teaching disciples in a foreign land.

Facing an entirely new language environment and cultural background, Wang did not opt for elaborate commercial marketing. Instead, he pursued a "subtraction philosophy" and the belief that the "great path is utterly simple". In the quiet city of Saskatoon, he utilized long stretches of uninterrupted time to focus on polishing and comprehending the true essence of Tai Chi:
Stripping Away Mystical Overload: In his daily teaching, Wang strongly opposed mystification. He strictly refused to instill complex, abstract theoretical concepts like meridians or Qi sensations into his students. Instead, he advocated using the simplest and most direct methods—practical biomechanics—allowing the body to naturally discover the correct mechanical state through solid foundational practice.
Returning to the Role of a Guide: In this foreign land, he was no longer a traditionally strict and rigid "master," but rather a guide willing to accompany students as they explored the boundaries of physical and mental health. He frequently emphasized to his overseas disciples that Tai Chi internal kung fu is by no means slow-motion gymnastics or a performative routine. Rather, it is a profound battle of a person facing themselves.
As his teaching steadily progressed, even in Canada where the environment had drastically changed and the pace of instruction had slowed down significantly, Wang's Tai Chi affinity naturally bloomed into beautiful flowers. He went on to teach nearly a hundred students of different skin colors and cultural backgrounds in the local community.
II. Tailored Instruction: A Record of Cross-Cultural Life Reshaping (2019 – 2023)
While teaching abroad, Wang Zuoyao placed extreme emphasis on "tailoring instruction to the individual" (因人施教). He did not force a one-size-fits-all approach onto his students. Instead, he customized training programs based on each person's lifestyle, physical wear and tear, and specific pain points. In his Saskatoon club, Tai Chi became a bridge for many locals to escape the cruel jokes of fate and reclaim their health:
Student & Background Physical / Medical Challenge Custom Training Approach Transformative Result
Xinling
(Chief Disciple)
Long-term desk work resulting in severe, deep-seated chronic pain that could not be relieved. Focused practice on relaxation techniques (song gong), standing meditation (Zhan Zhuang), pushing hands, and the foundational 13-form. Eliminated her chronic pain in just three years. Developed genuine skill with breath protecting her body, facing kicks and waist strikes without fear, with internal power surpassing her husband and fellow peers.
Yin
(74-Year-Old Western Coach)
Had taught Tai Chi for over a decade, but realized his internal power was lacking after pushing hands with an elderly singer at age 73. Resigned from his coaching job to train full-time under Wang and Chief Disciple Xinling, starting from absolute zero. Completely corrected his decades-old habit of looking at the ground while walking, allowing him to walk with his head held high and looking straight ahead. Heavy daily gardening work became effortless.

78-Year-Old Runner
(Local Enthusiast)
Years of running had caused overuse of the forefoot, severely impairing her physical balance. Continuous postural and structural adjustments through Zhan Zhuang and relaxation exercises under Wang and Xinling. Successfully restored her body's natural mechanical balance and stability.
Chronic Disease & Cancer Survivors
(Local Students)
A student battling cancer under immense psychological stress; a middle school teacher with severe myasthenia gravis who could barely stand. Guided mental release to drop psychological burdens; customized, step-by-step physical rehabilitation tailored to neurological and muscular limits. The cancer survivor released their mental burden, experiencing profound physical and emotional relief. The teacher with myasthenia gravis regained the ability to stand steadily and returned to the teaching pulpit.
III. Hanging by a Thread: The University Hospital ICU Crisis (2024)
In 2024, just as Wang Zuoyao was establishing a solid foundation for Tai Chi in his new overseas home, a catastrophic, life-and-death crisis suddenly struck inside the emergency ward of a university teaching hospital in Canada.
Wang was gravely diagnosed with multiple organ failure, complicated by extremely severe lung effusion. Medical monitors chimed relentlessly, signaling an extraordinarily perilous situation. Under the looming shadow of kidney failure, doctors determined that he might need to depend on insulin injections for the rest of his life. Facing this critical conventional medical impasse, the medical team stated that an immediate, cold physical intervention was mandatory: a surgical puncture to aspirate the fluid from his lungs.
However, lying in the ICU hospital bed, Wang Zuoyao maintained a completely clear cognitive state, accurately answering multiple questions posed by the doctors. At this critical juncture that would dictate life or death, he firmly rejected the doctors' proposal for immediate surgical fluid extraction. Looking at his deeply anxious wife, Jinxiu, standing beside him, he reached out, gripped her hand tightly, and with an unwavering gaze said:
"Jinxiu, you must believe me."
In that decisive moment, Jinxiu chose to step back and offer unconditional tolerance. She recalled how, over their many years together, they had experienced countless disagreements in daily life. Yet, time and baptism had verified that every single major intuition and judgment her husband had ever made miraculously turned out to be correct and came to fruition in the end. In the emergency room, under the crushing weight of death, Jinxiu handed the absolute authority over his life and her complete trust back to her husband.

IV. Father-Son Relay and the "Third Transformation": A Resurgent Song of Sunshine
In the intense, suffocating atmosphere of the hospital ward, a survival battle rooted in Eastern life mechanics and internal energy resistance quietly unfolded.
Wang Zuoyao slowly stood up from his hospital bed. Utilizing the condensed internal breath he had cultivated day in and day out over decades, he used his hands to rhythmically and powerfully slap his chest and lungs back and forth, attempting to use his true Qi to guide the accumulated fluid out of his body. Even more moving to everyone present, he called his two sons, who were guarding the room, to his bedside to perform a "relay breath-guiding" assistance. The blood-linked breath of father and sons echoed and merged in the void, allowing him to truly experience the deepest energy and warmth of life.
By dawn the next day, a miracle arrived right on schedule:
Total Resolution of the Physiological Crisis: After a night of energetic guidance and struggle, the severe lung effusion was completely and naturally expelled. With the dissipation of the fluid, the medical indicators of multiple organ failure began to improve across the board. He not only thoroughly escaped kidney failure and the fate of lifelong insulin injections, but his bodily functions welcomed a miraculous physical rebound.
Achieving the Realm of the "Third Transformation": This life-and-death test in the ICU became the most sublime and thorough "Third Transformation" (换劲) of Wang Zuoyao's martial career. This was a high-level breakthrough: "Supreme mastery, complete body-mind unity". He purified and unified all the energy and internal kung fu within his body, completely shedding all external traces. He transformed the highest level of Tai Chi combat into a spiritual cultivation of life, reaching the highest Zen realm beyond life and death.
The Purity and Gratitude of a Child-Like Heart: Having endured the torment of death and physical reconstruction, Wang felt no pain or fear whatsoever. Instead, in his dreams of rebirth, he experienced an unprecedented sense of extreme joy and crystal clarity. When his weakened body slightly recovered, overwhelmed with emotion, he looked at his wife and sons by his bedside. Shedding all grandmaster ego, he showed extreme sincerity as he repeatedly apologized and confessed to his family: "I wasn't good to you here, I let you down there..." It was the child-like sincerity of a heart stripped of all external life shells, filled with absolute gratitude.
Inside the hospital room, this reborn Tai Chi practitioner learned a famous English song from the medical staff: "You Are My Sunshine". In the recovery days that followed, he sang it to everyone he met. Amidst the warm, flowing melody, the internal mastery of traditional Chinese martial arts and a cross-cultural heart of gratitude composed the most moving hymn of life.
V. Conclusion: Born From Death, Unity of Boxing and the Path
From crossing the ocean to Saskatoon in 2017, to defeating death in a university hospital emergency room in 2024 through internal Qi guidance, Wang Zuoyao’s eight years in a foreign land constituted an epic tempering—transitioning from "subtraction teaching" to "breaking through via supreme mastery".
Through his unreserved, tailored instruction, he allowed his overseas disciples to witness that Eastern Tai Chi can not only defend the body and build physical strength, but also reshape the mind and body to defeat stubborn illnesses. Furthermore, through his near-death "Third Transformation," he proved to the world the ultimate pursuit of Tai Chi internal kung fu: It lies not merely in daily, uninterrupted practice through summers and winters, but in the absolute courage to rely on internal energy to find life amidst death when facing a terminal crisis. Above all, it is revealed in the crystal-clear love and gratitude for family and life upon being reborn.
As the melody of "You Are My Sunshine" gradually drifted out of the ICU ward, a Tai Chi grandmaster whose internal space had reached supreme mastery—with body and mind completely unified—had achieved nirvana. As the footsteps of the year 2026 quietly approached, this martial artist who had survived a fatal catastrophe was preparing to carry the profound Zen insights verified by his very life. He was ready to embark on his ultimate overseas vision: establishing a dual-brand system and building a global ecosystem for the transmission of authentic Tai Chi.
