Part 4: Burning the Boats — The Path of the Disciple (2011 – 2016)

"To me, this is not suffering, but enjoyment; I am too happy to even think of it as hardship. Only when you experience the beauty within can you understand me."

"If the master leaves, this kung fu is gone. I would rather go bankrupt myself than let this kung fu disappear from Tong'an."

— Wang Zuoyao

Entering the second decade of the 21st century, after experiencing commercial ups and downs and physical rehabilitation through "healing through yielding," the over-forty-year-old Wang Zuoyao completed a profound baptism of body and mind. His past "Martial Obsessive" (Wu Chi) obsession with external hard Kung Fu had transformed into calm restraint over more than three years of Tai Chi nourishment. However, destiny's script did not let him stop at general fitness and recuperation. From 2011 to 2016, a martial legend involving lineage mentorship, risking personal bankruptcy, and thorough physical restructuring officially unfolded.

I. The Park Encounter and Seeing Through Internal Energy (Spring 2011)

In April 2011, 43-year-old Wang Zuoyao was practicing in a park as usual when he chanced upon an unfamiliar middle-aged man practicing Tai Chi nearby. With just one glance, the former practitioner of Shaolin external boxing and eclectic weapons was completely stunned: the man's movements seemed unadorned, yet they were steady, condensed, and flowed like floating clouds and running water. His gestures concealed a majestic, imposing momentum, uniting form and spirit to reveal profound Tai Chi internal kung fu. Wang Zuoyao instantly asserted in his heart—this is a true master of internal energy!

A true master of internal energy

This gentleman practicing boxing was Master Ni Jianhao, an inheritor of traditional Yang-style old frame Tai Chi and the fourth-generation direct lineage grandmaster of Wang Qihe Tai Chi. Master Ni had won national and provincial Tai Chi pushing hands championships multiple times, taught extensively in Beijing and Shenzhen in his early years, and engaged in deep technical exchanges with at least 300 martial arts masters across the country, enjoying great prestige in the pushing hands community. This pushing hands master's most legendary skill lay in his ability to accurately discern whether a person's internal energy flow was unobstructed just by observing a single movement of their form.

Wang Zuoyao gathered the courage to step forward and humbly seek advice. Master Ni did not say much; at first, he merely corrected Wang's movements in the simplified 24-form. During the instruction, Master Ni hit the nail on the head, pointing to a specific detail in his practice and saying:

"You are blocked here, that is why your shoulder hurts."

This single sentence struck Wang Zuoyao's heart like an electric shock, as if the physical dead knots of his entire body were instantly seen through by the master. He returned home and practiced strictly according to the instruction. In just one week, the stubborn chronic pain that had long troubled certain joint points was significantly relieved, and his body became exceptionally relaxed, letting him truly experience what "unobstructed energy flow" felt like.

During those days, Wang Zuoyao happened to have promised to accompany his uncle, aunt, and relatives—who were visiting home from Singapore—on a travel excursion. However, throughout the trip, his mind was completely distracted and restless, entirely preoccupied with the charm and movements of Master Ni's boxing practice. He was itching to practice and couldn't stop thinking about it, excitedly and repeatedly mentioning his morning encounter with the Tai Chi master to his uncle and relatives along the road. Seeing his extreme obsession, a relative smiled and reminded him:

"Why don't you hurry back and ask if he would be willing to accept you as his disciple and teach you?"

These words awakened him from his dream, and Wang Zuoyao immediately contacted Master Ni that very day. To honor traditional lineage etiquette, he specifically flew to Macau to sincerely seek the full consent and support of his Tai Chi enlightenment master, Hong Lihua, before officially becoming a disciple under Master Ni Jianhao.

Due to his exceptionally high comprehension and pure desire for the path, Wang Zuoyao became the first formal disciple (Chief Disciple) ever accepted by Master Ni in his life. By an extraordinary coincidence that was by no means accidental, Wang Zuoyao became the first formal chief disciple under both Master Zhang Xuezhi of Shaolin Plum Blossom Fist in his early years and Master Ni Jianhao of Yang-style old frame today—an ultimate manifestation of his martial strength and determination.

II. Emptying the Self and Shutting Down a Million-Yuan Commercial Empire (2012)

Master Ni Jianhao had practiced Tai Chi since the age of four or five, possessing a profound childhood foundation; Wang Zuoyao, on the other hand, was already a middle-aged man over forty. To practice the most authentic and core Tai Chi true kung fu at this age, the physical and physiological difficulty can be well imagined. Master Ni placed an extremely strict requirement on him: he had to abandon all his past martial arts foundations and force-exertion habits, resetting like a computer system to start from absolute zero as a clean "blank sheet of paper," beginning with the most foundational exercises and stance training (Zhan Zhuang).

Facing this requirement, Wang Zuoyao demonstrated an astonishing and mad determination of "burning his boats":

Severing All Retreats: In 2012, Wang Zuoyao officially withdrew from online trade and completely shut down his factory business, which he had operated for many years and which generated over one million yuan in annual profit. He abandoned lucrative commercial income and cast aside all distractions just to devote himself full-time to cultivation without any wandering thoughts.

His Wife Jinxiu's Resolute Support: In the face of such a mad decision to "abandon business for martial arts," ordinary outsiders found it hard to understand, but his wife Jinxiu gave him the greatest tolerance and support. According to Jinxiu's memories, she often disagreed with her husband in daily life in the past, but the baptism of time allowed her to clearly witness that every major intuition and judgment her husband had ever made miraculously came true in the end, so she stopped objecting. More importantly, as Wang Zuoyao admitted: "The savings earned before are enough to maintain basic living. After practicing Tai Chi, my health got better and better; I never again needed to trouble Jinxiu to apply medicine and massage me every day, nor did I need her hard care when sick. Would she still object?"

Ten Hours of Daily Extreme Immersion: Without a single penny of commercial income, Wang Zuoyao poured his entire life into the training ground. He dedicated himself to practicing standing meditation (Zhan Zhuang), basic skills, routines, and breathing mind-methods for over 10 hours daily. His standing meditation practice broke through from initially standing for 2 or 3 hours at a time to continuously standing for 6 full hours without collapsing (even attempting to stand in one breath from 8 PM until after midnight).

Regarding people around him sighing at his ascetic-like training, Wang Zuoyao himself laughed and said: "To me, this is not suffering, but enjoyment; I am too happy to even think of it as hardship! Only when you experience the beauty within can you understand me." This state of transforming extremely tedious hard training into supreme spiritual enjoyment perfectly interpreted his persistence in channeling extreme diligence into sculpting his "invisible interior space."

III. Risking Personal Bankruptcy to Build the Datong Club and Secure the Legacy (2013)

Just as Wang Zuoyao was immersed in the wonderful realm of daily advancing internal energy, shocking news arrived—he accidentally heard that Master Ni was considering emigrating to the United States to teach Tai Chi.

To Wang Zuoyao, this was like a bolt from the blue. He knew extremely well in his heart that if he lost this master, his Tai Chi path—having just touched the doorway—would be difficult to continue; more importantly, once the true master went overseas, this extremely precious authentic lineage of Tai Chi internal kung fu would have its cultural transmission completely severed locally.

To prevent the lineage from being cut off and to keep his mentor from leaving, Wang Zuoyao demonstrated a respect for his master and a heroic spirit that surpassed ordinary people:

Decision Dimension Implementation & Contribution Core Belief & Oath

Donating Real Estate for Renovation He hesitated not at all to take two downtown apartments under his name, spending a full year of time and blood, sweat, and tears on meticulous decoration and comprehensive remodeling, officially establishing the "Tong'an Martial Arts Club" (i.e., Datong Martial Arts Club) in Tong'an, Xiamen in 2013. "If you want to learn true kung fu, use your true heart."

Securing the Family's Livelihood He not only created an exceptionally superior and professional teaching venue and environment for his master, but also completely contracted and guaranteed Master Ni's family a life free from worry regarding food, clothing, and daily necessities, thoroughly eliminating any worries behind the master's teaching in Tong'an. "If the master leaves, this kung fu is gone. I would rather go bankrupt myself than let this kung fu disappear from Tong'an."

This extreme sincerity of risking personal bankruptcy and giving away his family wealth just to retain true Tai Chi kung fu deeply moved Master Ni Jianhao. The mentor ultimately decided to abandon his plans to go abroad and remained stationed at the Datong Martial Arts Club in Tong'an to teach with dedication, which also attracted numerous friends eager to pursue the true essence of Tai Chi to come and follow the practice.

IV. Master Instruction and the Physical Rebirth of Two "Transformations" (2015 – 2016)

Because he kept his true master, Wang Zuoyao also ushered in higher-level martial encounters and physical tempering in his martial life.

At the end of 2015 (the year of Yiwei), Master Ni Jianhao specifically invited traditional Yang-style old frame Tai Chi grandmaster, Master Kou Guijiang, to personally visit and guide at the Datong Martial Arts Club in Tong'an. Master Kou was illustrious and enjoyed immense prestige in the Tai Chi world, having served as a bodyguard for founding generals in his early years. Master Kou stayed at the Datong Martial Arts Club for over a month. During this time, highly appreciating Wang Zuoyao's comprehension and hard work, he repeatedly gave him one-on-one, face-to-face oral instruction and key guidance.

These commanding insights instantly elevated Wang Zuoyao's comprehension of Tai Chi mechanical structures and mind-methods to a completely new level. Before parting, Grandmaster Kou Guijiang patted Wang Zuoyao on the shoulder, leaving behind a prophecy and encouragement that influenced his entire life:

"Practice well for three years according to these methods I taught you, and you will surely surpass your master."

Under the careful polishing of two top masters and an extreme self-discipline of no less than ten hours daily, Wang Zuoyao's physical functions and internal energy state underwent an extremely intense rebirth. In traditional Tai Chi internal cultivation, a true stage breakthrough is known as the "Transformation" (Huan Jin / 换劲). During these years of shutting down business and dedicating himself to cultivation, he completed significant breakthroughs dreamed of by martial artists for two consecutive years:

2015: Achieving the "First Transformation"

Modern Experiential Interpretation: Initial-stage breakthrough — "Great bodily and mental ease, thorough physical relaxation."

Physical Transformation Record: The physical tempering of this stage completely resolved the deep, hidden traumas left behind from his early years of blindly using brute force in external boxing, as well as the severe metabolic deficits caused by commercial socializing and toil. Long-accumulated toxins and sub-health conditions within his body were thoroughly cleared, his bones and tendons became unobstructed, and his physical functions welcomed a comprehensive, deep recovery.

2016: Successfully Achieving the "Second Transformation"

Modern Experiential Interpretation: Mid-stage breakthrough — "Unobstructed energy flow, freely controlled force exertion."

Physical Transformation Record: In this advanced stage, he truly comprehended and grasped the core mechanics of Tai Chi internal kung fu. His physical body completely shed the stiff, clumsy force and brute external power accustomed to from practicing Shaolin boxing and hard conditioning in the past, achieving sinking breath to the Dantian (Qi Chen Dan Tian). Internal breath flowed smoothly between his meridians and joints, allowing him to retract and emit force with extreme precision in every gesture and movement.

This deep "Transformation" was by no means merely a theoretical breakthrough on paper; when it truly occurred, it was accompanied by extremely intense physiological restructuring and struggle within the body. According to his wife Jinxiu, when Wang Zuoyao experienced these two major breakthroughs, his body endured agonizing pain and transformation akin to a severe illness, and the physical labor pains during the Second Transformation were even more violent and heavy than the first. As older martial generations said, true internal kung fu is "brewed and melted out bit by bit through years and blood and sweat"; Wang Zuoyao used extraordinary endurance and perseverance to complete a remodeling from an ordinary mortal frame into true Tai Chi internal kung fu amidst intense physiological tempering.

V. Conclusion: Forging the Golden Body, A Lineage Foundation Complete

From that stunning glance in the park in the spring of 2011 to smoothly completing the Second Transformation of internal kung fu in 2016; from a business leader generating over one million yuan annually to a martial disciple starting from zero and standing in meditation for six hours at the Datong Martial Arts Club. Wang Zuoyao spent the six most golden years of his life completing a thorough act of "burning his boats".

He let go of fame and fortune, shed the pride of external boxing, and risked personal bankruptcy just to honor his master and continue the martial lineage. Over these six years, he not only constructed his own profound, unobstructed, and pure internal energy foundation, but also firmly established the orthodox Yang-style old frame tradition in the Datong Martial Arts Club in Tong'an, Fujian.

However, the ultimate mission of a martial artist whose internal space has been completely reconstructed and whose energy flow is unobstructed would not be confined to a corner of the world. In the unseen arrangements of destiny, the vast forests and distant wooden cabin that called to him in early dreams had become increasingly clear. As 2017 approached, this Tai Chi inheritor who had completed two transformations was about to carry the true essence of internal kung fu verified by his life across the ocean, initiating an advanced legend of facing emergency resuscitation and rebirth in a foreign land in Canada...
